Dave Karpf holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University's Taubman Center for Public Policy. His dissertation explores the Internet's effects on political associations. This includes the growth of community blogs as quasi-interest groups, the development of internet-mediated organizations like MoveOn.org, and changes to the membership and fundraising environment for existing advocacy groups. The Blogosphere Authority Index has been developed as part of that larger dissertation project.
Dave's interest in political advocacy groups stems from over a dozen years of work as a volunteer leader with the Sierra Club. Dave has been a member of the organization's Board of Directors since 2004, and previously served as National Director of the Sierra Student Coalition in 1999. He thinks serving on a national board while in graduate school was an "interesting" idea and doesn't particularly recommend that folks try it at home.
